Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Monday

Usually, when government enacts a tax, it never repleals. Such was the case with an excise tax placed on telephone service back in 1898 to help fund the Spanish-American war. Even though the war ended just a few years later, the government continued to levy the tax to this day. Now, a Supreme Court ruling has overturned the tax. This means refunds are coming your way next April 15! But, the bigger impact to the City of Los Angeles is that the city will no longer be able to get an approxiamately $220 million annual share of this fee, which will have a huge impact on next year's budget. Monday's Budget and Finance Committee meeting will address this issue. Lets hope our Mayor and City Clowncil will think about where they cut back on pork and not impose additional taxes to make up for this income loss. Lets hope.

Here's something really exciting! Monday morning the San Fernando Valley Democrats are participating in a "Take Back California Rally" with John Kerry and Phil Angelides. Maybe Kerry is going to teach Angelides how to handle losing.

A nonpartisan opinion poll has found that a majority of likely California voters with an opinion in the gubernatorial race favor the inclusion of third party candidates—especially that of Peter Camejo, the only Latino in the race—in the upcoming debate(s). The poll was conducted by Pulse Opinion Research and commissioned by the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA).

Memo to Rick Orlov: Please use the word "Blog-LA-Sphere" in one your next articles and make Mike at Franklin Avenue happy. I'll give you a topic - Zuma Dogg joining the Mayor Sam blog.

Don't forget! We have our new Mayor Villaraigosa blog - We Clean Your Toilets - up and running. Check it out and feel free to contribute your comments about our favorite Mayor.

You know, I really used to like this blog because it made the silliness of LA politics "real."

Lately this has just been a GOP/right wing mouthpiece, giving credence to anyone angry at City Hall no matter how stupid or silly they are (Read: Zuma Dogg"). Why don't you run videos of Melrose Larry Green too?

Get rid of the ideologues and crackpots such as Moore and Dogg and start covering stuff the way you used to.

Everyone is angry at City Hall fool. If you want to "cover stuff the way you used to" write up another lying press release. "Real LA politics" just aren't yours at this moment. Come back in 20 years.

The "this blog used to be great" comments are getting pretty tiresome. We got the message already.

Poor elephant!!! How could allow this to happen and why did Animal Services have given them a permit??

Paint Is Washed Off Animal
The L.A. Animal Services Department orders its removal from a live elephant used as part of a downtown art installation.

After a few days on display in a downtown warehouse, an elaborately painted live elephant was washed down Sunday by order of the city's Department of Animal Services.

Tai, a 38-year-old female Indian elephant, had been painted trunk to tail as part of a downtown art exhibit....Tai, the elephant — painted in the same red and gold pattern as the walls — serving as a physical embodiment of the metaphorical phrase "the elephant in the room."

The show, titled "Barely Legal," attracted crowds of visitors but angered animal rights activists and Ed Boks, the general manager of the city's Animal Services Department — even though the agency had granted the permits for the elephant's appearance.

Speaking of Rick Orlov I love his tip off columns. Today he makes fun of Antonio making negative statements about the media. Dumb Dumb Dumb

Villaraigosa wants credit for what he is trying to accomplish
It was a low-key trip for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to Washington, D.C., last week,
But the mayor also appeared to be somewhat in a pique - particularly with the press - about what he sees as a failure to give him credit for what he is trying to do.
During a summit on affordable housing, Villaraigosa had his audience buzzing with his repeated references to "these guys always second-guessing. They are going to second guess because ... that's the role of the media.

"(But) I didn't get elected to take up space. So let them second guess, let them say we thought too big, let them say we dreamt too big. These guys in the back, they get their opportunity to kind of hit, and I get my opportunity to hit back."

Mayor Sam doesn't do animal stories anymore. This is the quack-free zone. Go take your quarrel with Animal Services someplace else. To quote you, "Yawn."

Nice shout out to Zuma on lavoice.org with video of Antonio going after John & Ken.

....The mayor just attacked mock-shock jocks John and Ken, points out Zuma Dogg (the latest addition to the potent, never-less-than-arresting battery of loose cannons at Mayor Sam's Sister City). Antonio used his allotted time at the 4th Annual Impact Awards to call out the noisome pair for being divisive blowhards.

Phil A and the haughty French looking guy who, by the way served in Vietman. They should have called out the "Boring" police for these guys. Same old class warfare rhetoric. Here is the story:

John Kerry Campaigns For Angelides In WeHo
(AP) WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. John Kerry campaigned on behalf of Phil Angelides for governor Monday morning in West Hollywood.

The Massachusetts Democrat spoke to a half-empty gym in West Hollywood.

About 75 people heard the former presidential candidate criticize California Republican politics without mentioning
incumbent Arnold Schwarzenegger by name.

But Kerry referred repeatedly to state programs that had been cut and to politics that caters to special interests.

The Democratic gubernatorial candidate appeared with Kerry and pleaded that, quote, "We are ready to fight."

Kerry said, "You have a very, very clear choice. Say no to these special interests and yes to the middle class."
