Obstinate

Unfazed by the L.A. Bridges and Watts Gang Task Force debacles, Councilmember Tony Cardenas, chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Gang Violence and Youth Development, wants more of your money with no strings attached. He wants policy makers to be held accountable to provide a steady stream of funding for anti-gang programs. No call for any measure of program effectiveness.

The policy makers need to make a commitment to fund these programs that work, and to hold them accountable to make sure that they continue to fund them, and make it institutional, just like every community has made it institutional to have a budget for a police department.

Cardenas made these remarks at a recent conference of “gang experts” organized by the Pat Brown Institute at Cal State L.A., which, judging by KPCC’s coverage amounted to another exercise in wheel-spinning and self-indulgence. To his credit, Cardenas was the only expert who managed to express a coherent thought.

Listen to excerpts of the conference below. If you can stomach it.

Note how Cardenas says the "programs work" but never offers concrete evidence. Same story with incompetent Janice Hahn. More more more!!

Tony Cardenas is one of the more annoying councilmembers in his presentations, mostly all pre-scripted exchanges and laden with rhetoric, pushing Latino issues whether there is any merit established.

I would like to see how they could defend their positions if there truly were opportunities for challenging the content of their speeches. This goes for most of the councilmembers, with some of them so completely myopic and agenda-driven that their positions become.... here it is... "transparent."

The idea too many of them put forth is that the gang members and wannabe members are just victims of circumstance. Really? So then they have to have special provisions cut out for them for a better deal than the ones not following that path. Is that "fair" or just a social engineering experiment?

Money-spenders and vote-buyers, that's all it is. Any resemblance their programs have to effectiveness is purely and entirely coincidental.

11:48 Janice Hahn always claims hers does, but Janice's claims are always suspect. I'm guessing CD1.

Cardenas and Janice Hahn, with her fan club head Bill Rosendahl who says she's "always right on the money" (as a fellow tax-and-spend money wasting, middle-class ruining, liberal) are as bad as Reyes and Alarcon.

NO way vote yes on this bullshit. We've already wasted million on these stupid gang programs and not one success story can be said. Janice Hahn is in bed with gang bangers, watch the Fox 11 news story. Cardenas should be fixing his damn ethic commission violations before speaking out. The gang programs in LA are corrupt. LA Bridges donated to 6 council members so that's where our tax money is going. Again, David Z failed to report this in his story last week. Yeah, Let's not forget Hector Marroquin who abused $1 MILLION of our tax dollars and council morons said nothing even after he was arrested.

Any bond measure to deal with gangs should include the use of technology. Instead of investing in these useless gang programs, this city should wire high gang areas with cctv cameras attached to dvr's and automated license plate reading cameras. Our biggest problem with gangs is no one will testify against them. Cameras can be the passive witnesses that always testify. Automated license plate reading cameras can track vehicles, alert local cops of stolen cars, and wanted vehicles traveling in their jurisdictions.

We need evidence to put these thugs in jail.

Tony Cardenas is just confussed, give him a break. He doesnt know if the affordable housing devlopers or the gang program operators can give him more money. Once James Acevedo helps him figure it out he will make more sense.
