Former Laker Shaq O'Neil endorses Nuch for City Attorney

Some would say that sports and politics should not mix, but what if a former local sports icon is also a Sworn Peace Officer??

Many in the sports world may not know that former Laker great Shaq O'Neal is a Sworn Peace Officer who has arrested criminials in the field.

Lets hope that Shaq's aim with a firearm is not on par with his free throw shooting for the sake of liability.

But now Shaq the Citizen has come out with his thoughts on who would should be the next City Attorney.

Daily News Rick Orlov provides the details

The big guns came out Thursday in the Los Angeles City Attorney's race.In the May 19 election between Carmen Trutanich and Councilman Jack Weiss, it was Trutanich who scored big when he announced he was being supported by basketball superstar Shaquille O'Neal.

Less supportive, in a city where gun control is widely backed, was the backing of the California Rifle and Pistol Association for Trutanich.

Weiss called an event to criticize the NRA backing of his opponent _ whose law firm has represented the organization _ but also to remind voters he had the supprt of another basketball superstar, Magic Johnson."I would much rather have a shooting guard backing me," Weiss joked. (Jack, for us who can remember the glory days of the "SHOWTIME" in the eighties, Magic was the "point guard").

O'Neal, who played for the Lakers from 1996-2004, helped win three world championships, released a statement saying he was impressed with Trutanich's proposals to increase gang prevention, after school and job training programs.

"I don't get involved in politics very often," O'Neal said in his statement. "But, as a father and police officer, when it comes to our kids, I'm going to get involved. (Carmen) is the only man I trust to work with our kids to keep them safe at school and away from gangs."

Basketball fans would note that centers win championships not puny point guards, but then this is a political blog.

Angelenos need stop complaining and get out the vote for Trutanich on May 19. On March 3, 2009 only 18% (285,658) voted of the total 1,596,165 registered voters.

Also vote NO on Propositions 1A through 1E.

Learn the Facts about Proposition 1A

HIGHER SALES TAX! Proposition 1A will extend the sales tax hike for an additional full year. California taxpayers already pay the highest sales tax in the nation. This is a direct attack on all working families, especially low-income residents.

HIGHER CAR TAX! Proposition 1A will extend the DOUBLING of the car tax. This affects every California car owner.

HIGHER STATE INCOME TAX! Proposition 1A will extend an income tax increase for two extra years. Californians already pay the highest income tax rates in the nation. Under Prop. 1A, you’ll pay even more.

REDUCTION OF TAX CREDIT FOR DEPENDENTS! Californians with children will see a reduction in the tax credits for dependents, costing them $200 per child. Prop. 1A will extend this attack on families for an extra two years.

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is urging a vote of "NO" on Prop. 1A, which DOUBLES the tax increase!

We were talking about this in the gym tonight.

Back in 2000 when the Lakers won the world championship hooligans rioted in front of Staples Center and destroyed two LAPD vehicles, as well as windows of local businesses, fishwrap racks and some news media trucks.

Shaq stood up and donated over $40K to the LAPD to buy a new car as did the Lakers itself.

Then Mayor Richard Riordan and City Attorney James Hahn came down hard on the thugs.

I figure that Villaraigosa and Weiss would want to mentor them.

It's no surprise that Shaq endorsed Trutanich; every other law enforcement oriented organization that is not a partizan (one way or the other) has endorsed Trutanich. All of Weiss's endorsements can be read as "Weiss is a democrat in trouble and we need to support him even if we cannot stand him." It's a party thing.

Weiss and the Mayor need to get their hands on all the union cash they can now that FOR ONCE Jack Weiss has been caught red-handed holding an illegal fundraiser (see LA TImes yesterday).

Why do I say for once? Well, every other Jack Weiss ILLEGAL activity usually remains hidden until after the election, when the fines are simply the 'cost of doing business' for Weiss.

Now there's no question, no doubt and of course no innocent explanation.

The brief facts:

1) In one of Weiss's rare appearances at City Hall, Weiss voted for a law making it illegal for city employees to engage in political fundraising in city elections.

2) The Mayor appointed Kelly Candaele to the City's Retirement Board to advise on pensions.

3) Jack Weiss voted to approve the Mayor's appointment of Candaele.

4) On April 27, 2009 Candaele hosts a $1,000 a plate fundraiser for Jack Weiss.

5) On April 28, 2009, the LA Times calls the Mayor's Office and asks for an explanation as to why a city employee was engaged in fundraising for Weiss.

6 ) Within 4 hours, Candaele resigned.

Weiss knew the law, he voted for it, and he knew Candaele, he voted for him.

It's a flagrant violation of the law, and Weiss cannot say he didn't know (his usual excuse) because he did. Period.

Weiss chose to break the law because he was arrogant enough to believe that by the time the crime was discovered, the election would be over. That was his previous experience with illegal campaign donations, so why should it be any different this time?

Well the difference is that Trutanich is winning handily and many of those who have run interference for the 'Prince of Bel Air' have had enough of him, and are more than happy to throw him under the bus.

Weiss supporters must be wondering how on earth to respond to this, the finest example ever of either ineptitude or flagrant disregard for the law. Neither quality speaks well of Weiss as a City Attorney.

That's why Shaq endorsed Nuch,

If you do not like the way Villaraigosa cannot keep campaign promises, cannot tell the truth, cannot work with community people, cannot make his schools work, THEN, do not vote for those he endorses. Since he has endorsed Jack Weiss, vote for Carmen Trutanich. Voters blew the Mayor out of the water on Measure B. Send the message over and over again. Weaken him to the point of irrelevance.

Angelenos are so turned off by the dirty politics going on they're not voting. Let's be clear though LAPD OFFICERS DID NOT ENDORSE TRUTANICH. Their union did without asking them. Cops don't like Trutanich and his defending criminals they put away. You ask cops at the agencies Trutanich is saying support him and its a lie. Weiss has major problems with developers and absenrism in council. Trutanich has major peoblems with support from NRA who many of us hate because of the gun violence. Sadly its going to be the lesser of two evils who wins.

Shaq endorsed Trutanich because of Jack Weiss campaign fund raising concerns? Oh, then forget it. I thought he endorsed Nuch because of his vision and direction for the city attorney's office. Only an idiot would vote for someone because of the other guy's fundraiser.

Jay Leno said on his show last night that he chooses Magic over Shaq - as a businessman, with a chain of theatres and mall named after him, a strong record of improving his community. Whereas Shaq admits he's not involved or aware of politics, just woke up one day and agreed to this endorsement for some reason.

Also joked in disbelief that some guy from a two-man law-firm infamous for defending shady characters no one else wants to represent, with no public service under his belt, just woke up one day and said "Gee, I want to be City Attorney of L A." Leno said no one had been paying attention before but now they are and they're laughing at Trutanich.

Mr. Jay Leno is a highly paid professional comedian, $17 million or more a year. Anything Jay Leno says should stay within that comedian context.

Mr. Earvin “Magic” Johnson endorsed Councilmember Villaraigosa for mayor in 2005. Canyon – Johnson Urban Funds are possibly benefiting the millions of dollars from the city pension funds that are controlled by Mayor Villaraigosa.
