Saturday Ultra-Briefs

Scott Svonkin in his element

Mars Melnicoff  has a revealing story in the current LA Weekly on LACCD candidate and food sprayer, Scott Svonkin. I even get a quote in the piece!

Two senior building inspectors for LADBS are caught in a sting taking bribes to sign off on construction projects. Why does this feel like a "tip of the iceberg" story?

Happy 85th Birthday Hugh Hefner!

If it's 2012, it's time for Phil Jennerjahn to lose another race for office!

Some things in life are a given; Death, Taxes, and Republicans hate women.

Sorry to bottlecap you Joe, did not see your story until after I posted.

Phil seems to think redistricting will allow him to run for this seat. What he doesn't know is that any California voter of the required age can run for Congress whether they live in the District or not!

Jennerjahn is running for office again? When's the clown going to get a clue? Phil can't get votes but at least he'll bring some unintended comic relief!

Joe,

You might want to read the "Hyde amendment" which restricts federal funding for abortion. It has been around about 10 years or so. So this is nothing new, just enforcement of the amendment, which the Dems chose to ignore.

4:28, You make no sense. Of course I know about the Hyde amendment. It's the Republicans who keep saying that funding for PP is money for abortions.

Joe, maybe it's just me, but I don't think the Republicans are big fans of clean air and clean water, either.

I actually have hugged trees a couple times just to see what it was like. They're scratchy.

Joe,

"Doesn't make sense"....really?? PP provides abortions, does it not? Abortions paid for with federal dollars, right?? The Hyde amendment says "No federal tax money will be spent on abortions". What is there not to understand?

Look, I'm for a womans right to choose......but not with my tax money!!

Dimwit @12:09, Federal Tax dollars have not paid for abortions for decades. Planned Parenthood does not use Federal Tax dollars to pay for abortions. Got it?

Phil Jennerjahn is a joke! LOL! I would never consider voting for him after what he did to Mike Gatto.

OK Joe,

Explain this:

Excerpt from the article....

"Among the proposed spending cuts is an end to Title X, a federal grant program established in 1970 to provide contraceptive services, sexual health care supplies and information to low-income women. The program, which cost about $317 million in 2010, does not directly fund abortions, but often supports clinics that provide them."

So Joe, what is the difference whether or not it DIRECTLY goes to fund abortions....but to the clinics that provide them?? It is STILL federal money going to the clinics for them to spend on what they want......a real nice sleight of hand.....No we dont fund abortions, but we fund the clinic that does them. Nice try Joe.

If you and your liberal buddies are soooooo concerned about this, start a non profit to fund it....and get your big mouth Hollywood liberals to kick in a few bucks....put your money where your mouth is. But you wont, because you want everybody ELSE to pay for your social programs...What part of we are broke do you not understand??

Oh BTW, this is from the New York Times.

4:53, 97% of the services Planned Parenthood provides has nothing to do with abortions. For many women, PP is their primary care physician, providing a full range of services including reproductive health and planning. That is where the federal funds are designated. The abortions are paid for by the patient and through donations. Got it now?

Joe, can you please explain it again? I was looking at Michael's Lemon Meringue Pie recipe on a later thread.

Perhaps I an naive but would someone please explain to me the difference between the bribes to city inspectors and campaign donations to council member?

April 11, 2011 7:42 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

When you bribe a City Building Inspector you actually get a service rendered. With a City Councilmember, payment of a bribe has no discerable purpoase.

Thank you 12:08 a.m. I have been so confused about the motives and integrity of council members in Los Angeles. These ethics fines I don't understand and i guess council members don't understand the fact that there is no free lunch. The question I always ask is if they were not on the city council would they be offered a free ticket to the event?
