Support the Right of Betty Pleasant to exercise her Freedom of Journalistic Expression in South LA

Residents of South Los Angeles and all who truly believe in a Free Press, should demand that the LA Wave Newspaper Group reinstate longtime "Soulvine Columnist" Betty Pleasant.
Supporters of the First Amendment Right to a Free Press should put the heat on LA County Board of Supervisor Mark "Home Renovation-Thomas, for his assault on the right of Betty Pleasant to express her opinion, free of political recrimination.
A Constitutional Reminder for the "Free Press Suppresser of South LA".
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.[
Betty Pleasant on her departure from the LA Wave Newspaper via her George McKenna-related missive at City Watch.
Without batting an eye, I quit my newspaper job when the publisher chose to interfere with my support of McKenna and I’d do it again.  I don’t let a job hamstring my principles. I wasn’t raised like that. After all, education and writing are important professions in my family: My son is a high school teacher; my late husband was a university professor; my sister-in-law was a university professor, my niece is a university professor; my nephew is a recognized published poet.

McKenna disclosed to the audience of supporters the price Betty Pleasant paid in standing up to the diminutive Power Monger ........., "This election wasn't a race for me, but a commitment I started a long time ago. One thing our community needs is unity! " "We lost an opinion columnist of the Wave for giving her opinion in Soulvine, got fired, instead it went viral. When a person that was a friend the year before the next year fights you issuing a political mandate. Spends a million dollars for his candidate. The mandate is stay with me or else. "  Link here to view a past Mayor Sam Post that documents the LA Wave Newspaper Group's being fiscally beholden to "Home Renovation-Thomas" Special Interest ad revenue. We may not always agree with Betty (especially when she is keyboarding "Wanton Missives of Distortions" (WMD) directed at the likes of Jan Perry and Bernard Parks), but that is her right, a right taken from longtime South LA Writer, by a vindictive politico who took exception to the Soulvine Columnist's "Written Missives of Distinction" regarding his failed LAUSD Power Grab.
A suppressor of  Free Speech/Press is not fit to hold Elective Office.
Your thoughts ..............

What a shame Mayor Sam. You didn't do your homework.

During the primary for the 62nd Assembly race, Ms. Pleasant berated candidate Autumn Burke, every chance she got and remained on the Wave staff. A candidate supported by Mark Ridley-Thomas.

Pleasant also disagreed with MRT's LAUSD candidate, Alex Johnson. She continued to be published under "the bottom line" as opposed to her regular "soulvine" column.

This article, by author Erin Aubry Kaplan, clearly says Ms. Pleasant resigned from the Wave two weeks ago. Meaning she chose to leave. The Wave allowed her to bash two candidates of MRT's so who can really tell what is the true nature of why she is no longer with the Wave. Have you interviewed Betty?

Betty Pleasant regularly bashed MRT candidate, Autumn Burke, for the 62nd Assembly, and remained on the Wave staff.

She then turned to bash Alex Johnson, candidate for LAUSD and continued to submit articles which were posted under "the bottom line" instead of the soulvine.

What is clear is there is another article, you must have missed, which clearly says Betty Pleasant chose to resign from her post a couple of weeks ago. Here is the link.

Just a note - Mayor Sam did not write this article, it was Red Spot.

My view is Betty has a right to her speech, but her Wave columnn. The publishers have every right to use her or not use her for whatever reason.

And if she doesn't like that, she can kiss my fat ass!

I like you Urban Girl, but your faith in Johnson and his mentor is misguided. Johnson was involved with the NYC efforts to deny teachers due process and purge them so they could be replaced by interns from TFA .They have them doing that here with the BOE. They are lawless and McKenna is a by the book type . I prefer that sort . I was especially appalled by how Thomas undermined Democracy by pushing away the possibility of an appointment . I think you know this was not good for district 1 schools which have gotten the brunt of reform's brutality. Dr. Mckenna was the obvious choice for this and the day La Motte died we were desperately looking for someone to protrect the schools . When Celes King, who I asked to do the job, sent me McKenna's bio, I knew he was the right guy, so he was really recruited by Damian Goodman, George, Yo Beckles and others . I do not Know him, but I worked as a sub at WA Prep and McKenna's spirit fills that campus. It is miraculous as any one wojo knows Clay or Athens will teoo you. I can t say when Betty quit but what she wrote was rightous. She id on fire! The lowly tactics these people employed were shameful. McKenna had plenty of dirt on Johnson because I AM the excavator of said dirt. He took the high road, and it was a close election. It seems AJ wasnt above pitching a little woo to work you all up. MRT was working church ladies preachers profiting from charter schools. Had Johnson stuck to that and avoided the slander, he probably would have won because McKenna is so grumpy about those buggy reporter trolls at LASR. I am grateful for AJ 's lack of ethics and the stench of MRT's desperation . I am sorry that the Wave is under anyone's influence especially these bullies. I know the right man was chosen . You know McKenna better tow the line or I will be his problem ;'P, but no way he will ever be as wrong for our kids as that pretty puppet.
